How the 8th Edition Guide Relates to Caging Equipment, Facility Construction, and Micro and Macro Environmental Standards for Housing Animals

This presentation will integrate defined areas in the new Guide that strive to further the welfare of laboratory animals.  Consideration will be given to the concept of "should" and "must", the latter being increased dramatically over the previous Guide.  Responsiveness to cage space allocations as recommended in the 8th Edition will be evaluated.  Will they be performance or engineering based, particularly when evaluated by AAALAC-I and/or for federal grant applications.  Room design incorporating green energy use to allow for maximum cage density will be discussed.

Attendees, animal facility supervisors, managers, veterinarians, research personnel, science administrators, lab planners, architects and engineers will have the opportunity to consider options to best meet the 8th Edition of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals intent.
